Game Day #44 Thrashers Preview
Tue, 05 Jan 2010 18:32:21 EDTby: PensNation
The Atlanta Thrashers come to Pittsburgh tonight for the first time this season, the two clubs are meeting for the second time this season the first was in Atlanta on November 21 where the Pens prevailed 3-2. The Penguins will look a little different this time around as they will have several defenseman this game that they didn't for the last due to injury Letang, McKee, and Goligoski were all out. The Pens will hit the ice with some different line combos as Kunitz was put on the shelf today, look for Luca Caputi to assume the wing position on the Malkin line where Kunitz has been residing recently, Gonchar is still out no word on when he will return. Also look for Brent Johnson in net tonight as Fleury will be getting the night off as he has played in 36 of the teams 43 games already this season which would put him on pace for an astounding 69 games in the regular season not to mention whatever games he plays in the Olympics.

A little something that I think everyone should see.

Penguins winger Chris Kunitz will undergo surgery on a torn muscle in his abdomen and will be on the shelf for 4-6 weeks. The Pens have recalled forward Luca Caputi from the Baby Pens to take his place.
“Chris has played with this injury for an extended period of time and although it is always difficult to lose a very talented player, we all believe this is the best decision for him,” said Ray Shero, the Penguins Executive Vice President and General Manager. “We are confident that he will come back strong after this surgery. In the meantime, we’ll look to our other forwards to step up in his absence.”

It all started off so well with hopes of the Steelers making the playoffs and the Penguins getting out of this 4 game slump, but all was lost as the Ravens sealed the Steelers fate and the Panthers put down the Penguins in the second period after erasing a 2-0 goal lead by the Pens. This recent defeat put the Penguins at 4-6 in the past 10 games and now and 6 points behind the New Jersey Devils whom are still 3 games behind the Penguins. The Penguins unlike the Steelers will be able to turn things around sooner than later with a game against the Thrashers tomorrow night.

The Penguins go into Florida looking to snap their recent 4 game skid and get back to their winning ways. Look for Fleury to start in this one even though they are back-to-back games, also look for the Pens to register a ton of shots on net as they usually do against the Panthers because of their lack of the ability to play defense. Also don't look for Gonchar in the game as he is likely to miss his second straight game due to injury. Game starts at 5:00pm so it will be a full slate of Pittsburgh sports in Florida today.

I don't know why but I thought this game was a 7:00pm game and not an afternoon game so I missed pretty much the entire thing. So no half-assed recap this morning. Penguins play the Panthers today at 5:00pm preview to come shortly.
