Pens Sign Fedotenko

The Penguins signed winger Ruslan Fedotenko to a 1-year contract today. The contract is worth $1.8 million which is a paycut over what he made last year during his first year with the club.

The Piece Moves On FA Round Up Day 2

Day 2 of the free agency period is winding down and it has been a rather slow day, the only big news coming on the home front was the signing of defenseman Rob Scuderi by the Los Angeles Kings. The contract Scuderi signed with the Kings was $3.4 Million a year for 4 years, which in my opinion was way to much for him based on 1 good season, I'm not saying I don't like Scuderi because i'm not I think he was a valuable player to the Pens in the playoffs. As for the Penguins they were rumoured to have offered $2 Million a year for 5 years, which sounds like more in the neighborhood of what he is worth. The $1.4 million difference may look like a big chunk, but you have to figure in the amount for cost of living in L.A. versus the cost to live in Pittsburgh which by all accounts is significantly cheaper. About Last Night

In about a 3 hour period last night from 8:00 to 11:00 there were some major dealings in the NHL. The dominoes started to fall once Marian Gaborik signed with the Rangers, which led into the Canadiens signing Brian Gionta to a 5-year $25 million contract, and ended with Martin Havlat going to Minnesota on a 6-year contract worth about $30 million. Out of these three signings I believe the Gaborik was by far the worst, giving an extremely injury prone guy a 5-year $37.5 million dollar contract is insane, but I guess if you have the money for things like that and don't care if the player is going to sit out atleast half the season then by all means go for it. Say It Isn’t So - Day 1 of Free Agency 7-1-09

There were some big names that moved on day one as well as some that stayed put. The Penguins didn't make very much noise, they lost defenseman Hal Gill to the Canadiens and picked up forward Michael Rupp from the Devils. The biggest move today came out of Chicago when they signed Marian Hossa to a 12 year deal, the deal is extremely front loaded so much so that he will only make a total of 3.5 million in the final 4 years altogether. It’s Like Christmas Day in the NHL

Today is the day when the majority of big name free agents will either be on the move or staying put. Some key free agents from the Penguins that have yet to sign are Rob Scuderi and Ruslan Fedotenko the rest of the Penguins FA's may have already been shown the door, but no one knows for certain how the Pens will fair in the free agent market this year. There will not likely be any big name guys brought in with the Pens having roughly $5.5 million left under the cap to work with, so don't get your hopes up on a guy like Gaborik coming in to play on Sid or Geno's wing next year.
